Instrumentation services: four SOPs from instrument selection to calibration
The instrumentation provider's chain as four SOPs: instrument selection, installation and commissioning, calibration and documentation, and calibration planning, plus dispatch, out-of-tolerance, emergency, shutdown and ATEX work.
Instrumentation services is the work of a provider that specifies, installs, calibrates and maintains process instruments on a customer's plant. This family orders four SOPs in the sequence one instrument moves through them, from a customer requirement to a calibration interval adjusted on drift evidence, and adds the six procedures that hang off that chain.
Selection starts with engineering judgment rather than a catalogue: process conditions lead to a measurement principle, a compliance check, the customer's technical approval and a confirmed order. Installation verifies the instrument on site, installs under permit and isolation, runs the loop test and calibrates it by name against calibration and documentation before the customer signs the handover. That SOP is the family's centre: traceable references, as-found readings before any adjustment, as-left after, and a certificate an auditor can follow. On a service agreement, the planning SOP sets criticality and interval per instrument and adjusts the interval on drift evidence.
The failure the chain is built around is an instrument that reads wrong and nobody knows for how long. Both the calibration and the planning SOP hand a failed as-found reading to out-of-tolerance calibration, which sizes the drift, works out which process decisions relied on the instrument since its last good calibration, and notifies the customer before anyone touches it. Unplanned work arrives through service request and dispatch, where ServiceDesk triage chooses between a remote fix and a visit, or through emergency troubleshooting when the fault is not yet named. The turnaround SOP compresses the same work into a customer's shutdown window under the customer's permit-to-work.
Two members widen the scope rather than add a step: ATEX selection and installation adds zone classification and a marking-verification gate, and project delivery wraps engineering, procurement, FAT, installation, commissioning and operator training around a full automation solution, calling the selection and installation SOPs by name. The commercial side has no template: the service agreement itself and the invoicing behind a visit sit outside the family. The customer's own view of the same equipment, where the plant's maintenance team owns the work order, is the maintenance family; the metrology discipline is shared with laboratory equipment.
The sequence
Step 1: New Instrument Selection & Specification SOP
A new instrument selection and specification SOP: understanding process conditions, choosing the right measurement principle, checking compliance, and a customer technical-approval gate before any instrument is quoted or ordered.
Step 2: Process Instrument Installation & Commissioning SOP
An instrument installation and commissioning SOP: equipment verification, safety preparation, installation, electrical and mechanical checks, configuration, loop testing, calibration and a signed customer handover.
Step 3: Instrument Calibration & Documentation SOP
Insatech's core calibration SOP: verify traceable reference equipment, record as-found readings before adjustment and as-left readings after, then issue a certificate an auditor can follow end to end.
Step 4: Preventive Maintenance & Calibration Planning SOP
A preventive maintenance and calibration planning SOP for instruments under a service agreement: criticality assessment, interval determination, scheduled maintenance, drift-trend analysis and evidence-based interval adjustment.

- Out-of-Tolerance Calibration SOP — An out-of-tolerance calibration SOP for Insatech: assessing how far and which way an instrument drifted, determining what it affected, notifying the customer before touching it, then correcting and recalibrating.
- On-Site Service Request & Dispatch SOP — An on-site service request and dispatch SOP for Insatech: ServiceDesk intake and triage, the remote-versus-on-site decision, technician assignment, equipment preparation, the customer visit and the service report that closes every case.
- Emergency instrument troubleshooting SOP (instrumentation service provider) — An emergency instrument troubleshooting SOP: gathering process data on a fault that isn't yet named, diagnosing which instrument is implicated, weighing safety and production urgency, then choosing a remote fix or field dispatch.
- Turnaround / plant shutdown service SOP — A turnaround and plant shutdown service SOP for instrumentation: scope and resource the shutdown window with the customer, coordinate safety, isolate, calibrate, repair and certify every covered instrument before the final report.
- ATEX Instrument Selection & Installation SOP — An ATEX instrument selection and installation SOP for classified hazardous areas: zone classification, a hard ATEX marking-verification gate, technical review, hazardous-area installation requirements, inspection and commissioning.
- Customer Project Delivery SOP: Instrumentation & Automation Solution — A customer project delivery SOP for a full instrumentation and automation solution: engineering, instrument selection, customer approval, procurement, FAT, installation, commissioning, documentation and operator training.
