Woodworking process: nine templates from timber receipt to finished casegoods

Woodworking is the casegoods route through a furniture plant: timber comes in and is graded and dried to target, boards are selected against a cut list, cut, machined, drilled, sanded, assembled and finished, with a check at each station that the piece is worth carrying to the next. This family orders nine templates in that sequence and adds the three panel and finish variants a job may take on the way.

Timber receiving grades a sample for splits, warp and insect damage, measures its moisture, and books species, grade and moisture into the ledger. Moisture inspection samples across the stack, because a kiln charge is not uniform, and routes a high reading back to the kiln and a low one to conditioning. Lumber selection matches grain and figure to the cut list and checks yield. Cutting rough-cuts oversize so a defect exposed by the first cut can be routed around; CNC machining verifies program and workholding before the run and separates a worn tool from a setup error; drilling and routing sets the jig, drills the hardware pattern and decides salvage or scrap.

Sanding gates on dust extraction, walks the grit sequence and inspects under raking light, which shows the scratches flat light hides. Assembly checks that a sub-assembly is square while it can still be re-squared, and that doors, drawers and hardware align and operate. Finishing refuses a surface that is not ready, applies stain, sealer and topcoat, cures as its own step, and logs the coating batch so a later finish problem can be traced. Panels take a branch after machining: edge banding with a bond check that separates a machine fault from a bad edge, or veneer with a bubble-and-lifting inspection; species-driven wood finishing adds the grain-fill and oil-versus-film decisions.

Two steps are folded into others rather than drawn: kiln drying exists only as the correction loop in moisture inspection, and glue-up and joinery live inside assembly. Station checks sit on each template, but the roving inspector, the hold points and what happens to a nonconforming piece are the furniture quality family, and the machines' preventive maintenance, tool replacement and dust extraction inspection are furniture equipment maintenance. A finished piece leaves this chain at packaging under furniture delivery; upholstered seating takes the upholstery route instead.
