What the furniture finishing process is
Finishing is the department where a manufacturing defect from three stations earlier finally becomes visible — and where a finishing defect of its own gets created if surface prep is rushed. A stain applied over an inadequately sanded surface telegraphs every scratch and tool mark the sander missed, in a way raw wood never shows and a customer immediately sees.
The other failure mode specific to finishing is impatience with cure time. A topcoat that looks dry to the touch can still be soft underneath, and moving or stacking a piece before it has fully cured produces marks and tack that no amount of care in every earlier step will explain.

How it works
Don't let staining start on a surface nobody checked
"Surface acceptable for finishing?" needs to be a real decision after sanding and dust removal, not an assumption that the previous step was done correctly. A defect stain reveals is much harder to fix than one caught before any coating goes on.
Give cure its own step, with a stated duration
"Cure the finished piece under controlled conditions" should state the actual cure time and conditions for your topcoat, not just 'let it dry.' A piece moved before it's cured produces damage that reads as a finishing defect but was actually a scheduling one.
Inspect after cure, not before it
Color and sheen can shift as a finish cures. Inspecting immediately after application risks passing a piece that looks acceptable wet and rejecting one that will actually cure to the correct sheen — inspect the cured result.
Record which batch and cure cycle produced each piece
When a finish problem surfaces after a piece has shipped, the batch and cure record is what lets you check whether other pieces from the same batch or cure cycle need the same look.

Why does the surface check happen before staining rather than after?
Because stain and sealer make surface defects — scratches, tool marks, uneven sanding — more visible, not less; they don't hide a problem, they highlight it. Checking surface acceptability before any coating goes on catches a defect while it's still cheap to re-sand, rather than after a coat of stain has to be stripped to fix it.
How long should a piece cure before it's inspected or moved?
It depends on the coating system, but the number should be written on the process, not left to a finisher's judgment about whether it feels dry. A topcoat that is dry to the touch can still be soft enough underneath to mark under light pressure — cure time and touch-dry time are different measurements.
What causes color or sheen inconsistency between pieces from the same order?
Most often it traces back to batch mixing, spray technique, or booth conditions (temperature and humidity) varying between runs rather than the topcoat itself. Logging the batch and cure conditions at release is what makes that traceable instead of a guess.
