A furniture manufacturing process map answers how an order becomes a shipped piece. A production workflow answers a narrower, shift-level question: once a work order lands on a specific line, what actually happens between changeover and handover? Those are different documents. The first is what a planner or a customer wants to see; the second is what a line supervisor and a machine operator actually run against, and it needs to survive contact with a jammed feed, a failed first-piece check, or a part that comes off tolerance halfway through a run.

The step most shop-floor documents skip is the first-piece check. A machine that was just changed over for a new job is not verified until someone has produced one piece and checked it against the job's tolerances — running a full pallet before checking anything is how a changeover error turns into a pallet of scrap instead of one bad piece. This template puts that check immediately after setup and before the line is allowed to run at production speed, and it puts a second, sampled check partway through the run rather than trusting the first piece for the whole job.

How it works

  1. Keep the first-piece check as its own step

    Do not fold "First-piece check passes?" into the general setup step. It is the one gate that stops a changeover error from becoming a pallet of scrap, and it needs its own decision node with a named Maintenance branch for when it fails.

  2. Set the in-process sampling frequency on the node

    "Output within tolerance?" should state how often a sample is checked — every N pieces, once per pallet, once per hour — on the chart itself. A quality check with no stated frequency gets skipped under schedule pressure.

  3. Give the stop-the-line branch a real owner

    State who is authorized to stop the line and quarantine output, and who is authorized to restart it after adjustment. If that authority sits with the operator alone, say so; if it needs a supervisor, the chart should show the handoff.

  4. Route the quantity gate back into production, not around it

    "Work order quantity complete?" answering No should return to running production, not to changeover. Sending an incomplete run back through setup wastes the changeover time you already spent.

  5. Make the handover step carry real information

    "Report output, downtime and scrap" should record what changed during the shift: adjustments made, quantity remaining, and anything the next shift needs to watch. A handover that is just a quantity count loses the reason behind any adjustment made mid-run.

What was adjusted and why, how much of the work order quantity remains, any quality holds still open, and anything unusual about the line's behavior during the shift. A handover that reports only a quantity produced loses every piece of context the next shift would need to avoid repeating an adjustment that already failed once.
