What the lumber selection and grading process is

Accepting timber into stock and selecting the right boards for a specific job are different decisions made by different people at different times, and conflating them is how a factory ends up with boards that passed receiving inspection but don't match what a particular piece of furniture actually needs — grain figure for a visible tabletop, for instance, matters far more to a specific job than it does to the general acceptance criteria at receiving.

The yield check this template includes is the step a purely visual selection process skips. Boards can individually match the appearance and grade requirement and still not yield enough clear material for the cut list once defects, grain direction and the cutting pattern are accounted for — which is a different failure than a grade mismatch, and needs a different response.

How it works

  1. Separate the appearance check from the yield check

    "Boards match appearance and grade requirement?" and "Sufficient yield from selected boards?" are different questions with different failure responses. A board can look right and still not yield enough clear material once the cut list is nested against it.

  2. State the appearance requirement on the cut list, not in someone's head

    Grain and color matching only works consistently if the requirement — book-matched grain, consistent color across a set, quarter-sawn figure — is written on the job, not left to whoever happens to be selecting boards that day.

  3. Loop shortfalls back to selection, not to the cutting station

    Both loops in this chart return to pulling additional or alternative boards, before cutting starts. A yield shortfall discovered mid-cut is a production stoppage; the same shortfall caught at selection is a five-minute correction.

  4. Record what was actually allocated, not just what was planned

    The species, grade and board count logged against the job should reflect what was actually selected and allocated, including any substitutions made during the appearance or yield loops — that's what makes cost and yield analysis meaningful later.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the grading done at timber receiving?

Receiving inspection confirms a delivery meets its stated grade and is acceptable to bring into stock at all. This process is a second, job-specific selection made later — choosing among already-accepted stock for the appearance and yield a particular job needs, which is a narrower and more specific decision than general acceptance.

Why can boards individually pass an appearance check and still fail on yield?

Because yield depends on how the cut list nests against the board — accounting for defects, grain direction and the specific dimensions needed — not just on whether the board looks right. A board with correct grain and color can still not yield enough clear, correctly oriented material for every piece the cut list calls for.

Who should be responsible for the appearance requirement on a cut list?
