Furniture delivery process: six templates from packaging to on-site installation
Finished furniture out of the plant as six linked flowcharts: packaging, the finished goods warehouse, picking and dispatch, loading, delivery and on-site installation, plus delivery damage handling and the furniture return process.
Furniture delivery is everything between a passed final inspection and a customer walkthrough: pack the piece for how it ships, store it under the right conditions until it is allocated, pick it by route, load the vehicle by weight and fragility, deliver with the customer present, and assemble, level and secure on site. This family orders six templates in that sequence and adds the two exception paths, damage found at the door and a return.
Packaging is usually the last look anyone takes before shipment, so it starts with a damage check, decides whether the piece ships flat-pack or assembled, and captures weight and dimensions. The finished goods warehouse routes upholstery and veneer to climate-controlled storage and stages a sold piece separately from unallocated stock. Picking and dispatch generates pick lists by delivery route, checks completeness and damage immediately after picking, verifies staging independently of that check, and confirms dispatch to the customer with tracking. Loading plans by weight distribution, positions fragile pieces last-on-first-off, and verifies load stability before the manifest is confirmed.
Delivery contacts the customer ahead of arrival, checks availability at the door with a reschedule path, branches to installation for pieces that need on-site assembly, and inspects for damage jointly with the customer before any signature. Installation checks site conditions against what was assumed at ordering, verifies component completeness before assembly, and walks the customer through before sign-off. Damage at either step goes to delivery damage handling, which photographs first, classifies cosmetic against structural, attributes the claim, and schedules the replacement regardless. The return process checks eligibility, inspects on receipt and decides open-box restock or rework.
Invoicing and payment are not drawn, so a signed walkthrough is where this family ends, and there is no replenishment template for stocked SKUs, so the warehouse here holds allocated and unallocated pieces rather than running a stocking policy. The pick, pack and ship discipline in a general warehouse is warehouse outbound, and returns in full, including reverse logistics and the refund, are returns and reverse logistics. A returned or damaged piece that needs work re-enters furniture quality.
