An analytical method has a life of its own, separate from any sample it is applied to: it is developed for an intended use, validated against a protocol, verified or transferred into each laboratory that will run it, changed under control and eventually reviewed for retirement. This family orders six templates in that sequence and adds the periodic review that decides whether a method continues, is improved, restricted or retired.
Analytical method development turns an intended use into a practical method through deliberate experiments and a readiness review. The validation protocol fixes scope and acceptance criteria as a controlled document before any data exists; validation executes it, reviews results against those criteria and ends in an approved report. A method then reaches other laboratories by verification, where the receiving laboratory documents local evidence that an established method suits its use, or method transfer, where sending and receiving laboratories run comparative testing under a shared protocol.
Methods fail in the gaps between those steps, not in validation itself: acceptance criteria written after the data was seen, a compendial method run without verification in the laboratory that adopted it, and above all a column, wavelength or sample preparation quietly altered with no assessment of the data generated since. Analytical method change control exists for the last one: clarify the change, assess method and data impact, complete the work that demands and implement a traceable update. The lifecycle review is the periodic counterpart, bringing current use, performance, change history and open issues together for one decision.
Every run in laboratory testing depends on the current approved method version, and a system suitability or OOS finding is often the first sign that a method needs the change or review step. The change step is the laboratory instance of the wider change control family, and the protocol, report and method document themselves are controlled documents under document control.
