Custom furniture orders is the front half of a made-to-spec piece: confirm what the customer wants, get a design and a sample signed off, turn the design into a controlled bill of materials, price it from that BOM, and hand engineering's package to production ready to build. This family orders six templates in that sequence and adds the overview, the catalogue-variant router and the change approval a customer's second thoughts go through.
Every later document keys off the approved baseline the specification review produces: a completeness and feasibility check, a clarification loop back to the customer, and a site constraint check for doorways and stairwells. Design approval presents a concept against it with a bounded revision loop and a signed sign-off with deposit; sample approval runs alongside for finish and fabric. Engineering builds the BOM, verifies it is buildable against real lead times, and releases it as a controlled version. Quotation builds cost from that BOM and routing and converts the accepted quote into a confirmed order, and the handoff confirms tooling and a control plan exist before formal acceptance.
The failures are the informal versions of each gate: design and quotation working from the sales team's notes, production starting because drawings existed, a released BOM edited directly, a customer change absorbed silently mid-build. Design change approval answers the last one: it assesses engineering and production impact separately, prices the disposition of completed work as scrap, rework or use-as-is, and gets the customer's approval on cost and schedule before the BOM is updated through its change gate. The made-to-order template is the router at the front: it confirms a catalogue variant's options fall within the pre-defined choices and sends anything outside them into this chain.
Two ends of the commercial cycle are not drawn. There is no sales order intake template, so the overview starts at the customer's request and this family at the specification review; and there is no invoicing or payment template, so the deposit at design approval and the accepted quote are as far as the money goes. The commercial front end in generic terms is the sales pipeline. The accepted handoff package is what furniture production planning consolidates into a master schedule and a work order.
