Customer Onboarding (KYC) Funnel Sankey Diagram: Template

Follow 1,000 new-account applications through identity verification, screening and manual review, and see how many open an account, are rejected or give up. Replace the counts.

A KYC onboarding Sankey follows applicants through the identity and screening checks a financial firm runs before opening an account. It shows the rejections and the people who simply give up, in the same picture.

The example starts with 1,000 applications. 820 pass identity verification, 80 fail it and 100 abandon the process. Of the 820, 760 clear screening and 60 go to manual review, and in the end 740 open an account.

Rejections and abandonment are drawn as nodes where several paths merge, so you can see that 160 applicants gave up, 60 of them after they had passed every check. That is a friction signal rather than a compliance one. The chart shows counts only and implies nothing about what any regulator requires.

How to read this diagram

  • 820 of 1,000 applicants pass identity verification; 80 fail and 100 leave at that step.
  • 60 applicants (8% of those who passed identity) are sent to manual review, and two thirds of them (40) are accepted.
  • 160 applicants abandon in total, 60 of them after screening was already clear.
  • 740 accounts are opened (74%) and 100 applicants are rejected (10%).

The data behind it

Invented figures for illustration. Not data about any real organisation. Counts of applicants for one period.

How it works

  1. Count applicants entering each check

Start with everyone who began the application in the period and add the checks in the order they run.

  2. Add every way out

Give failed, rejected and abandoned their own nodes, and send every earlier stage into them where applicants left.

  3. Check each stage balances

Everyone who enters a stage must leave it. Applicants still waiting need a node of their own.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a compliance report?

No. It is a picture of counts that helps a team see friction. Compliance records stay in your systems.

Can I split rejections by reason?

Yes. Replace the Rejected node with one node per reason and connect the checks to them.
