Card Payment Fee Split Sankey Diagram: Template
Show where 1,000 euros of card sales end up: the merchant's net amount and the fees that go to the card issuer, card network, acquirer and gateway. Invented rates, for explaining the split.
A card payment fee Sankey follows a pool of card sales and splits it into what the merchant keeps and the fees that go to each party in the chain. It is the clearest way to explain why the merchant receives less than the customer paid.
The example takes 1,000 euros of sales from three kinds of card and splits the total into 972 for the merchant and 28 in fees. The fees split into 14 to the issuer, 8 to the acquirer, 3 to the card network and 3 to the gateway.
The fee amounts are invented. Real rates depend on the country, the card type, the contract and regulation, and they change, so replace the numbers with those on your own statements. The point of the diagram is the shape: a very narrow stream that then divides again.
How to read this diagram
- The merchant keeps 972 of every 1,000 of card sales; the other 28 (2.8%) goes in fees.
- Half of the fees (14 of 28) go to the card issuer, 8 to the acquirer and 3 each to the network and the gateway.
- Debit cards are 60% of sales, so their ribbon is the widest even though per-card fees would differ in practice.
- The rates are invented and one set of rates applies to all three card types.

Enter your sales by card type
One node per card type, each flowing into a single Card sales node.
Take the fees from a statement
Add a Total fees node and a Merchant net node as the two outgoing flows of Card sales.
Split the fees by party
Divide total fees into the fee lines on your statement. They must add up to the total.
Frequently asked questions
Can I show different rates per card type?
Yes. Add a fees node per card type before the party fees, so each card type's ribbon splits on its own.
Are these the real fee rates?
No. They are made up for illustration. Use the rates in your own contract or statement.
