Cash Flow Sankey Diagram: Editable Template

Show where cash came from and where it went in one Sankey diagram: opening balance, receipts and borrowing on the left, payments and closing cash on the right.

A cash flow Sankey puts every source of cash on the left and every use on the right, with the pool of available cash in between. Closing cash is a ribbon like any other, so it is easy to compare with what was paid out.

Opening cash, customer receipts and a loan drawdown flow into cash available. Cash available then splits into supplier payments, payroll, taxes, rent, loan repayment and whatever is left at the end of the period.

This is a way of presenting cash that is already recorded elsewhere. It does not replace a cash flow statement, and the amounts here are invented.

How to read this diagram

  • Cash available is 2,000: 400 carried in, 1,500 collected from customers and 100 borrowed.
  • Suppliers (700) and payroll (650) take two thirds of it; 300 remains as closing cash.
  • Customer receipts are by far the widest source, which makes dependence on collections visible.
  • Figures are invented.

The data behind it

Invented figures in thousands of euros for one period, balanced so cash in equals cash out plus closing cash.

How it works

  1. Enter the sources of cash

Add opening cash and each inflow for the period, with their amounts.

  2. Enter the uses

Add each payment category and the closing balance as flows out of cash available.

  3. Check that it balances

Total uses plus closing cash should equal total sources. The balance check shows any difference.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a cash flow statement?

No. It is a visual summary of cash movements you already have. Keep your accounting records as the source of truth.

Can I split operating, investing and financing cash?

Yes. Add a stage for the three categories between cash available and the line items.
