Inventory Movement Sankey Diagram: Editable Template
Show how inventory moved in a period: opening stock, purchases and returns in, then sales by channel, damage, transfers and closing stock out. Editable template.
An inventory movement Sankey reconciles stock for a period: everything that came in on the left, everything that went out or stayed on the right. Shrinkage and closing stock are ribbons like any other.
Opening stock, purchases and customer returns flow into stock available. Stock available then flows out as sales, damaged or lost goods, transfers to another site, and closing stock. Sales split further by channel.
Because inflows equal outflows by construction, a mistake shows up as a node that does not balance. The units are invented; use the same unit throughout and take figures from your inventory system.
How to read this diagram
- 5,200 units were available: 2,000 opening, 3,000 purchased and 200 returned.
- 3,600 were sold, 69% of stock available; 1,200 remain as closing stock.
- Damaged or lost goods are 100 units, about 2% of stock available.
- Stores are the largest sales channel at 1,900 units.

Enter the inflows
Add opening stock, purchases and returns with their quantities for the period.
Enter the outflows
Add sales, damage and loss, transfers and closing stock as flows out of stock available.
Split sales if it helps
Break sales into channels, regions or customers. The pieces should add up to the total sold.
Frequently asked questions
What should the closing stock be?
The quantity counted or recorded at the end of the period. If it does not match inflows minus outflows, the diagram will flag the node, and the gap is the thing to investigate.
Can I do this by value instead of units?
Yes. Use one unit for the whole chart, for example euros at cost, and say so on the chart.
