Emissions Sankey Diagram: Editable Template
Group emission sources by scope into one footprint total with an editable Sankey. Illustrative figures only: a visual, not an emissions inventory or compliance report.
An emissions Sankey groups emission sources by scope and adds them to a total, so the biggest contributors are the widest ribbons.
Five invented sources feed three scopes, using the usual greenhouse gas reporting grouping: scope 1 is direct emissions from owned sources such as fuel burned on site and company vehicles, scope 2 is purchased electricity, and scope 3 is other indirect emissions such as business travel and purchased goods. The scopes add up to the total footprint.
This template is a way to present an inventory you have already compiled, not a way to compile one. The numbers here are invented and in tonnes of CO2 equivalent. Real figures need a documented method and emission factors, and a published diagram does not by itself constitute environmental accounting or meet any reporting requirement.
How to read this diagram
- The total is 1,000 tCO2e: scope 1 is 400, scope 2 is 300 and scope 3 is 300.
- Purchased electricity is the single largest source at 300.
- Scope 3 is usually much larger than shown in a real inventory and is hard to measure; here it is deliberately simple.
- Every figure is invented, so nothing here describes any real organisation.
The data behind it
Invented figures in tonnes of CO2 equivalent for a fictional organisation. Not an emissions inventory.
| From | To | Amount (tCO2e) |
|---|---|---|
| Natural gas | Scope 1 | 250 |
| Company vehicles | Scope 1 | 150 |
| Purchased electricity | Scope 2 | 300 |
| Business travel | Scope 3 | 100 |
| Purchased goods | Scope 3 | 200 |
| Scope 1 | Total footprint | 400 |
| Scope 2 | Total footprint | 300 |
| Scope 3 | Total footprint | 300 |

Start from a compiled inventory
Take the source totals from your own documented inventory, with the method and emission factors you used.
Assign sources to scopes
Send each source to scope 1, 2 or 3 according to the standard you report under.
State the basis on the chart
Say the period, the boundary and the standard in the title or a note, and cite the source of the figures.
Frequently asked questions
Does this calculate my emissions?
No. It draws figures you supply. Calculating emissions needs activity data, emission factors and a method.
Can I use it in a sustainability report?
As a presentation of figures you have already compiled and documented, yes. The diagram itself is not accounting or assurance.
