Financial close: four templates from journal approval to the reporting pack
The period-end close as four linked flowcharts: journal entry approval, account reconciliation, month-end close and financial reporting, with the record-to-report overview, bank reconciliation and fixed asset controls alongside.
The financial close is the recurring cycle that turns closed sub-ledgers into reconciled balances, an approved trial balance and a signed reporting pack. This family orders four templates in the sequence the close calendar runs them: journals approved, balances certified, the period closed, the pack issued. Alongside sit the record-to-report overview, bank reconciliation and the fixed asset lifecycle whose journals feed the close.
Every entry posted during the close goes through journal entry approval: evidence check, independent review, sensitive-entry escalation, posting with audit support. Once sub-ledgers are cut off and the accrual and intercompany journals are in, account reconciliation proves each ledger balance to independent supporting detail and gives every difference an owner or an age. Month-end close is the calendar that sequences it all to an approved trial balance, explained variances and CFO sign-off; financial reporting carries the reconciled inputs through consolidation and controller review to the issued pack.
The close fails quietly: a reconciling item rolled forward for a fourth month, an accrual reversed twice, a manual journal reviewed by its own preparer, a variance explained as timing with nothing behind it. Account reconciliation's aging of open items answers the first; journal approval's evidence check and preparer-reviewer split answer the second and third; month-end close puts variance analysis before CFO sign-off, so the fourth is a finding rather than a formality. Accruals have no template of their own: they are a stage inside month-end close and record to report, the broader period-end cycle with consolidation, disclosure and the statutory pack.
Bank reconciliation is listed here because cash is the balance most closes certify first, and it is also the last step of order-to-cash. Fixed asset management supplies the depreciation, transfer and impairment journals the close relies on. The sub-ledgers being closed are fed by accounts payable on one side and receivables on the other, and the actual-versus-plan review in the reporting step reads the plan approved under spend governance.
