Construction approvals, inspection and closeout: submittal to punch list
The quality path of a building project: submittal review before purchase, building permit approvals, inspection hold points during the work, and the punch list that closes it out.
Construction approvals and closeout is the quality path of a building project: nothing is bought until its submittal is stamped, nothing is covered until its hold point is released, and nothing is finished until the punch list is empty and the owner has signed.
A submittal is checked by the general contractor, reviewed by the architect or a specialist consultant and returned with an action, so a product is ordered against an approved item rather than an assumption. The building permit application is the authority's equivalent: completeness check, plan review comments, resolution and issue, with inspections as the conditions of the permit.
During the work the inspection and hold point process stops the next trade until the previous one has been inspected and released, with a nonconformance route when it fails. At the end, the punch list collects what remains, assigns it, verifies the fix and releases retainage on sign-off.
The same pattern runs through all four: a review, a comment, a resubmission and a record of who released what and when. Replace the roles and stamp wording with your own contract and your authority's rules before using any of them.
