UiPath Task Capture Alternative for Process Documentation

Need process documentation, not an automation platform? QueryChart helps teams maintain editable workflows, visual SOPs, swimlanes and chart versions.

Need process documentation, not an automation platform? QueryChart helps teams maintain editable workflows, visual SOPs, swimlanes and chart versions.

The short version

  • Choose the output before choosing the platform.
  • A recorded task still needs review of roles, exceptions and business rules.
  • QueryChart documents workflows; it does not run robots or record desktop tasks.

Continue with process documentation

Choose by the required deliverable. Task Capture is one UiPath product; automation and mining require other ecosystem products. Product information checked 2026-09-30.

Explore an editable process documentation example

Inspect the roles and decision paths, then open the example to adapt it to your own process. This is a process map, not a task recording.

  1. Define the work

The example starts with “Document need or change identified”. Add “Raise a document change request” as a concrete action rather than a screen interaction.

  2. Connect outcomes and exceptions

At “Carry out technical review”, inspect the outcome destinations and preserve the rejection or missing-evidence route alongside the normal path.

  3. Check decisions and handoffs

Inspect every route in the complete map, then confirm that “Document withdrawn and retired” is the intended finished outcome and the responsible owner is clear.

Choose the documentation workflow your team will maintain

QueryChart is a lightweight option when your deliverable is a maintained process map or visual SOP. Describe or import the process, edit its steps and owner lanes, review the workflow, retain chart versions and share the agreed procedure. It is a narrower solution than UiPath’s automation platform.

When QueryChart is a better fit: the work crosses teams, needs explicit decisions and exceptions, and must stay editable as responsibilities change. A document-control example below shows drafting, review, approval and publication; these are activities in the illustrated process. Configure actual chart approval features separately rather than assuming that drawing an approval box enforces approval.

When UiPath is a better fit: you need a record of desktop actions with screenshots, or want to carry captured documentation into automation development. Task Capture also supports manual Diagram Builder, so manual mapping alone is not an exclusive QueryChart capability. RPA, mining and orchestration belong to UiPath’s wider ecosystem.

For SOP documentation, switch the example between its map and procedure views and inspect instructions at each handoff. Keep an owner, review date and exception route. Version history makes revisions inspectable; team review and approval features depend on the chosen QueryChart plan and configuration.

Pricing and deployment: compare the documentation work you need, editor/reviewer access, setup, maintenance and any existing licenses. Task Capture’s product page offers a free entry point; do not assume that documentation requires buying the entire UiPath platform. Check /pricing and UiPath’s current pricing and licensing terms. How it works

  1. Define the process boundary

Name the trigger, finished outcome and owner. Separate business steps from individual clicks so the map stays useful after a screen changes.

  2. Map steps, decisions and roles

Write one action per row, label each decision outcome and assign an owner lane. Include rejection, rework and escalation paths.

  3. Review against real work

Ask a person who performs the task to walk the normal path and one exception. Add instructions and evidence references where the chart alone is insufficient.

  4. Approve and maintain the artifact

Use chart versions and your configured review/approval workflow. Share the agreed version and assign a next review date. Verify plan availability before relying on a team feature.

Frequently asked questions

Does QueryChart record user actions like Task Capture?

No. Create or import process information and review the editable workflow. QueryChart does not capture clicks or screenshots as you work.

Can QueryChart replace UiPath automation?

No. Keep an automation platform when you need RPA, automation deployment, orchestration, process mining or task mining.

How should a team check the map before using it as an SOP?

Walk through a real case and an exception with the process owner. Verify the roles, branch destinations and supporting instructions, then retain and share the reviewed chart version.
