Scope 1, 2 and 3 Emissions Sankey Diagram: Template

Show a company footprint divided into scope 1, 2 and 3 and then into the sources inside each scope. Replace the illustrative tonnes with your own inventory to present it clearly.

A scope Sankey is a way to present an emissions inventory you have already compiled: the total splits into the three scopes, and each scope into its sources, so the largest sources are the widest ribbons.

The example total of 10,000 tonnes of CO2e is divided into scope 1 (direct), scope 2 (purchased energy) and scope 3 (value chain), and then into representative sources in each. The pattern in which scope 3 dominates is common but not universal.

This page does not calculate emissions and does not check conformance with the GHG Protocol or any reporting standard. The figures are illustrative, the categories are simplified, and any real inventory needs its own method and evidence.

How to read this diagram

  • In this illustration scope 3 is 70% of a 10,000 tCO2e footprint, scope 2 is 18% and scope 1 is 12%.
  • Purchased goods and services is the largest single source at 4,000 tonnes (40%).
  • Purchased electricity (1,500 tonnes) is the largest scope 2 source.
  • The numbers are invented and do not describe any real company.

The data behind it

Invented, illustrative figures. Not an emissions inventory, and not a statement about any real organisation.

How it works

  1. Start from a compiled inventory

Use totals per scope and source from your own inventory or sustainability report.

  2. Choose the level of detail

Show the sources that matter and group the rest, and state the boundary and year.

  3. Enter the totals

Type the total into the scopes and each scope into its sources.

  4. Check against the source

Confirm the totals match the inventory you are presenting, and cite it.

Frequently asked questions

Does QueryChart calculate my emissions?

No. It draws the figures you enter. Calculating emissions and complying with a reporting standard need dedicated methods and verification.

Should I show all 15 scope 3 categories?

Show those that are material and group the rest into Other, otherwise the diagram becomes hard to read.

Edit this scope Sankey

Open the example as your own chart and enter figures from your inventory.
