Choose by the diagram you need to keep
The old Excel add-in drew a diagram inside a workbook. Microsoft's documented successor route is different: in Visio Plan 2 desktop, start with a Basic Flowchart or Cross-Functional Flowchart Data Visualizer template, select an Excel workbook and table, and let the wizard create the Visio drawing. The desktop workflow also documents Refresh Diagram and Update Source Data for a linked workbook.
QueryChart covers the overlapping task of turning a structured spreadsheet into an editable flowchart. Its input uses Box text, Shape, Line to, Line text and lane columns. A decision can point to multiple rows, and each distinct owner can have a swimlane. The chart below shows the input beside the rendered result. This does not preserve an old embedded Visio diagram and does not produce a native .vsdx file.
Choose Visio desktop when a .vsdx file, Visio stencils or a linked Excel workbook is required.
